Colombia’s provisional national earthquake toll continues to change. UNGRD’s August 14 update with a 4:30 p.m. cutoff adds one death and 43 injured to the 9:00 a.m. figures while sharply revising other categories without explaining why.
A human toll with a 4:30 p.m. cutoff
UNGRD records 288 deaths, 4,018 injured, 202 missing and 354 rescued. The same update covers 57,516 families, equivalent to 145,601 affected people in 448 municipalities across fifteen departments.
Both successive updates remain visible
At 9:00 a.m., the agency listed 287 deaths, 3,975 injured, 378 missing, 354 rescued, 56,448 families and 135,179 affected people in 437 municipalities.
The 4:30 p.m. publication does not explain the lower missing-person figure. It therefore cannot establish how many people may have been located, identified or reclassified.
Homes and buildings: revised inventories
The new update lists 80,744 damaged homes, 12,504 destroyed homes and 66 collapsed buildings. At 9:00 a.m., the figures were 79,108, 13,077 and 121. The lower figures in the last two categories are unexplained and do not mean homes were repaired.
Widespread impacts on public infrastructure
UNGRD lists 260 health centres, 2,595 education facilities, 2,116 community centres, 267 roads, 87 aqueducts, 55 road bridges, ten pedestrian bridges and five airports affected. It also reports 170 animals rescued and 258 affected; the lower second figure is likewise undocumented.
