Aftershock total reaches 293 by 8 a.m. on August 16

A count with a 7:00 a.m. cutoff

Of the 184 reported aftershocks, 15 were above magnitude 3.0 and two were above magnitude 4.0. The total is retained with its reference time and does not automatically incorporate events published or occurring later.

Three events before the cutoff

SGC’s manual catalogue places a shallow magnitude 3.1 event in Sipí at 3:44 a.m.; a magnitude 3.2 event at a depth of 89 km in San José del Palmar at 5:01 a.m.; and a magnitude 3.0 event at a depth of 58 km in El Litoral del San Juán at 5:45 a.m.

Two events after 7:00 a.m.

Two more records list a shallow magnitude 3.2 event in Istmina at 8:08 a.m. and a magnitude 3.1 event at a depth of 57 km offshore in the Pacific at 8:28 a.m. Because they occurred after the cutoff, they are not added to the count of 184.

No damage assessment in these records

The consulted bulletins publish no damage attributed to these five events. The absence of a damage assessment does not by itself prove there were no effects. Any link with the main sequence would require an explicit SGC classification.

Ten manually located events through the evening and night

On August 14, SGC places two events at 9:18:56 p.m. in Sipí (M1.7, depth 37 km) and 9:20:43 p.m. in Istmina (M1.6, 41 km). They are followed by Istmina at 10:08:35 p.m. (M1.9, 41 km), Sipí at 10:24 p.m. (M1.6, 42 km) and Pereira at 10:51:49 p.m. (M1.0, 10 km).

On August 15, the records place Medio San Juan at 12:39:11 a.m. (M2.5, 23 km), Istmina at 12:56:33 a.m. (M2.4, 25 km), Sipí at 1:30:41 a.m. (M2.2, 24 km), Pereira at 2:28:36 a.m. (M1.8, 3 km), and Medio San Juan at 3:12:59 a.m. (M2.3, 26 km).

All ten locations are manual. The records describe them as seismic events without labelling them aftershocks of the August 10 sequence. They publish no felt reports or attributed damage; that absence does not prove there were no local effects.

Four other events in Chocó on August 15

SGC places two events in El Litoral del San Juán (Docordó): a magnitude 2.5 event at 4:00:39 a.m. at a depth of 77 km, followed by a shallow magnitude 2.3 event at 4:04:18 a.m. at less than 30 km. Both locations are manual.

At Istmina, a provisional automatic magnitude 2.5 event is placed at 5:08:38 a.m. and less than 70 km deep. At Sipí, a manual location places a magnitude 2.5 event at 7:51:41 a.m. at a depth of 55 km.

All four records displayed zero public felt reports when consulted. This value does not prove that nobody felt the events, and they are not added to the 184 count without an explicit SGC classification.

A new total and three separate events

Pulzo reports an SGC update cut off at 8 a.m. on August 15 with 269 aftershocks since the main earthquake. The manual catalogue then locates an M2.0 event in Istmina at 8:18:54 a.m. and 40 km deep, an M2.8 in El Litoral del San Juán at 12:36:20 p.m. and 47 km, and an M2.9 in Sipí at 12:55:11 p.m. and 58 km.

An initial SGC post had given M2.7 and a preliminary location for the 12:36 p.m. event. The current manual record is retained. The three records describe seismic events and are not added to the total without explicit classification.

From 269 to 284 aftershocks

Noticias Caracol reports an SGC update cut off at 6 p.m. with 284 aftershocks since the main earthquake, including 19 above magnitude 3 and two above magnitude 4.

The manual catalogue documents eleven events between 4:36:45 p.m. on August 15 and 3:26:06 a.m. on August 16. They are not automatically added to the aggregate without explicit classification of each event as an aftershock in that update.

Five additional events on August 16

The SGC catalogue adds five events in the monitored area: Murindó at 3:51:50 a.m. (M2.6, 0 km, manual) and 5:17:15 a.m. (M2.2, 5 km, provisional automatic), El Litoral del San Juán at 6:15:02 a.m. (M2.3, 67 km, provisional automatic), Sipí at 8:30:28 a.m. (M3.4, 22 km, manual) and Medio San Juan at 8:32:55 a.m. (M2.1, 0 km, provisional automatic).

All five records showed zero public felt reports when checked. That figure does not prove that nobody felt movement, and none of the records publishes a damage assessment. They describe seismic events without explicitly classifying every one as an aftershock.

293 aftershocks at the 8 a.m. cut-off, followed by two events

The tally attributed to the SGC as of 8 a.m. on August 16 reports 293 aftershocks since the main earthquake: 20 above magnitude 3 and two above magnitude 4. The previous tally was 284 as of 6 p.m. on August 15.

The SGC catalogue later records a manually reviewed magnitude 3.1 event in Sipí at 12:42:07 p.m., less than 30 kilometres deep and four kilometres from the municipality, based on 28 stations. It also records a manually reviewed magnitude 2.8 event in Istmina at 1:44:49 p.m., 44 kilometres deep and 27 kilometres from Sipí, based on 34 stations.

The individual records do not explicitly classify these two events as aftershocks. They are therefore not added arithmetically to the total of 293.

New shallow event in Istmina

The SGC records a magnitude 2.8 event in Istmina, Chocó, at 2:37 a.m. on August 17, at a shallow depth of less than 30 kilometres. The updated bulletin is published at 2:47 a.m.

The bulletin does not explicitly classify the event as an aftershock of the August 10 earthquake. It is therefore documented separately and not added to the published total of 293 aftershocks.

The total reaches 325 aftershocks as of 7 a.m. on August 17

The SGC-attributed assessment lists 325 aftershocks, 21 above magnitude 3 and two above magnitude 4. Magnitudes range from 0.6 to 4.8 and depths reach 118.4 kilometres.

The published distribution lists 111 aftershocks in San José del Palmar, 67 in Litoral del San Juan and 61 in Sipí. The catalogue then records M3.1 in Carmen del Darién at 11:01 a.m., M3.4 in Istmina at 1:21 p.m., M2.7 in Sipí at 1:32 p.m. and M2.8 in the Pacific at 2:17 p.m. These bulletins remain separate from the 7 a.m. total.

Three new shallow events in Chocó

SGC places a magnitude 2.8 event in Carmen del Darién at 11:56 p.m. August 17, followed by M3.1 in Istmina at 3:42 a.m. and M3.4 in Medio San Juan at 5:49 a.m. August 18. They are recorded separately without automatically calling them aftershocks or adding them to an earlier total.

SGC announces 325 aftershocks through August 17

The cumulative figure published August 18 covers August 10–17. Its categories — 141 below M2, 157 from M2 to M2.9, 21 from M3 to M3.9 and two at M4 or above — add up to 321, four fewer than the stated total.

Three movements recorded in Istmina

SGC places M3.1 at 12:03 p.m., M2.5 at 5:22 p.m. and M3.2 at 5:38 p.m. on August 18. They are not automatically added to the previous day’s cumulative count. A total of 22,960 felt reports came from 31 departments.
