Mexico launches airlift to Pereira and plans 58.5 tonnes of aid

Two documented departures from Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum said the aircraft left Felipe Ángeles International Airport at 7:11 and 7:40 a.m. Mexico time, equivalent to 8:11 and 8:40 a.m. in Colombia. The displayed timeline slots are therefore 8:00 and 8:30 a.m.

Mexican Army personnel are also travelling to support operations. Their number, assignment and any USAR status were not specified.

An initial 19.5-tonne shipment

The 854 food parcels scheduled for August 12 represent 19.5 tonnes. Cadena SER reported at 11:09 a.m. Colombia time that this first shipment had arrived in Pereira.

No exact landing time was published. The timeline therefore uses 11:00 a.m. as a media confirmation time, not as the flight’s arrival time.

58.5 tonnes planned over three days

The programme announced for August 12, 13 and 14 totals 2,562 parcels, or 58.5 tonnes of food, water and medicine. This is a planned amount, not a volume already received or fully distributed.

The next confirmations should cover subsequent flights, the inventory received in Pereira and effective delivery to affected territories.

A Colombian request passed through diplomatic channels

Claudia Sheinbaum said the Colombian government had sent a list of needs through the two foreign ministries the previous day. The shipment therefore responds to an official request, although the full list was not published.

At 2:00:21 p.m., President Abelardo de la Espriella said the Foreign Ministry and UNGRD were channeling international aid for missing-person searches and affected families.

From arrival to distribution

A shipment’s arrival in Pereira does not establish final distribution. No volume handed over by municipality, beneficiary list or local delivery schedule has yet been published for this shipment.

The follow-up will distinguish departures, confirmed arrivals, domestic transport and handover to beneficiaries so that separate logistics stages are not conflated.

UNGRD confirms receipt of the first shipment

At 6:38 p.m., UNGRD confirmed that two Mexican Air Force aircraft had delivered 854 food parcels, or 19.5 tonnes.

Each kit consists of two boxes totalling 22 kg and, according to UNGRD, covers one week for a family of four. This confirmed delivery is distinct from the planned three-day total of 58.5 tonnes.

A third aircraft carrying 58 tonnes

At 7:24 p.m., the foreign ministry announced the arrival in Bogotá of a third Mexican government aircraft carrying 54 tonnes of food and four tonnes of medicines. The post gives no distribution locations, timetable or final beneficiaries.

Six flights received and allocation detailed

On August 15, UNGRD said it had received six Mexican flights over three days, carrying 2,562 food kits and more than 56 tonnes: 1,000 kits and 22.1 tonnes for Caldas, and 1,562 kits and 34.5 tonnes for Risaralda. The aircraft cited are an L-382G and a C-27J Spartan.

The received volume, described as more than 56 tonnes, remains separate from the 58.5 tonnes in the initial plan. The post attributes the shipment to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
