The national toll with a 5:00 p.m. Colombia-time cutoff on August 13 raises the provisional death toll to 281. Published by UNGRD at 6:48 p.m., it describes an evolving situation across 426 municipalities as searches and identification work continue.
A new national update at 5:00 p.m.
UNGRD records 281 dead, 3,971 injured, 379 missing and 348 rescued people. The published scope covers 44,936 families and 102,105 affected people across 15 departments and 426 municipalities.
The 9:30 a.m. toll listed 273 dead, 3,824 injured and 367 missing. The definitions and scopes in the two publications differ, so these successive totals cannot be subtracted to reconstruct what happened to particular people.
Homes and infrastructure
The 5:00 p.m. update counts 65,841 damaged homes, 10,677 destroyed homes and 127 collapsed buildings. It also lists damage to 236 health centres, 2,136 educational facilities and 1,168 community centres.
The same toll lists 198 roads, 71 aqueducts, 34 road bridges, 12 pedestrian bridges and five airports as affected. It also mentions 169 rescued animals and 243 affected animals, without detailing the operating status of each infrastructure asset.
Identification work advances
At 7:22 p.m., Medicina Legal bulletin No. 07 listed 250 bodies received, 228 identified and 194 returned to families. Bulletin No. 08, published at 10:11 p.m., raised those figures to 260 bodies received, 246 identified and 222 returned.
These figures describe forensic processing. They do not replace the national toll of 281 dead and must not be added to it.
Searches remain open
In a statement published at 9:46 p.m., UNGRD’s David Santiago Tamayo said confined-space search and rescue operations were continuing with support from international teams. The stated objective remains to find everyone reported missing.
AP reports that survival chances decline over time, while noting that they vary with conditions. The human toll therefore remains provisional and should be read with its cutoff time.
What remains to be clarified
Future updates should clarify changes in missing, rescued and identified people, along with the scope of each total. The actual operating status of affected roads, aqueducts, airports, health centres and schools also remains to be documented territory by territory.
